REUSE AND UPCYCLING AT VARNDEAN COLLEGE

The Student Climate and Environment Enrichment Group are initiating a scheme to encourage the reuse or upcycling of unwanted items. Amelia Schulz an IB student, has created an Instagram site on which staff and students can advertise unwanted items that could be of interest to others at the college.

The rationale is that every item that is reused or upcycled is one less item going into landfill and one less item being manufactured with the accompanying environmental costs. It is also a nice way to breathe new life into old items and upcycling in itself can be therapeutic. The Instagram site is predominantly for two types of items.

• Those that are in working order but are no longer needed (reused).

• Items that need a little repair or improvement in order to increase their value or utility (upcycled).

Staff/students will be notified of new items that have been donated via the usual college forums including the Student Bulletin and can view them on Instagram for making arrangements with the donor for collection for any items of interest. The plan is that mostly items will not be brought into college until a new owner is found.

However, there may be some limited space for a few small items to be temporarily stored. Please note that this scheme is not for selling items. Items need to be donated free of charge. So, if you have items that fit into the reuse or upcycle category please send details with a photo of the item(s) to: Amelia Schulz (88202@student.varndean.ac.uk) who will place it on the Instagram site.
